AAC New York section annual report now available here. AAC ACTIVELY SUPPORTS LIFTING By Howard Sebold, New York Section
APIP is a climbing community project dedicated to facilitating increased public access and enabling rock climbing at Palisades Interstate Park. The main focus of APIP's proposal are the Palisades cliffs on the west bank of the Hudson River, which stretch north approximately 20 miles and reach heights of 350-550 ft. They are among the most dramatic geologic features in the vicinity of New York City. APIP, Access Fund and AAC representatives have agreed that their interests are aligned in advocating for climbers and protecting climbing resources. Opening these cliffs would take pressure off other upstate climbing areas like the Gunks, provide easy mass transit and biking access, and enhance New York City's reputation as not only a great cultural and business center, but as a great outdoor destination as well. It is important to note that the climbing ban remains in effect and this is only a request to review the policy. Should the PIPC decide to grant the request, then the process of locating, developing, and managing appropriate areas will begin. The AAC looks forward to assisting with this process. All inquires should be directed to APIP or the AAC. For more information, please see the APIP website at http://accesspip.tripod.com.
